Holiday Parties from Tipsy to Team Building in 2024

In 2024 the workplace celebratory climate has transitioned and holiday parties have taken a new direction.  The days of Christmas cocktail parties and festive after-work gatherings may soon be a thing of the past.

The two main reasons that Employers are choosing team building holiday activities over Employees getting tipsy at a work get together are:

Alcohol Consumption: The legal risk factors related to alcohol consumption are a concern for employers and the HR planning department. The theme of almost every HR and Legal blog written about seasonal parties this year is about managing the risks related to alcohol consumption and the steps to take to avoid the after party legal fallout of sexual harassment claims that may have occurred due to poor judgment stemming from alcohol or cannabis consumption.

Mandatory Participation: Workplace celebrations should be inclusive, diverse, equitable and accessible (IDEA). Mandatory participation is no longer acceptable and not everyone celebrates at this time of year. In addition, hybrid work is on the rise and not everyone can make it to the celebration or chooses to attend.

Team Building is The New Tipsy:

The holiday season provides an opportunity for employees to connect and socialize outside of their usual work routines.

When employees feel valued, appreciated, and part of a team, they are more likely to be productive and engaged in their work. Holiday celebrations can strengthen employee loyalty and commitment to the organization.

Incorporating festive activities into the workplace schedule can transform the office into a hub of holiday cheer and employee wellbeing.

Below are some team building and well being suggestions to foster a healthy and inclusive workplace culture over the holiday season:

Decorate the Office: Create a festive  office ambiance by decorating the office with twinkling lights, and sparkling ornaments. Encourage employees to participate in the decorating process, fostering a sense of shared ownership and community.

Plan a Festive Office Lunch or Party: Celebrate diverse festive food traditions with a festive office lunch. Consider hiring a caterer to provide delicious holiday fare, or encourage employees to contribute their culinary creations for a potluck feast.

Festive Holiday Music:  Set the mood with classic holiday carols and modern tunes. Encourage employees to submit their favourite holiday songs to create a diverse and festive soundtrack.

Provide Treats and Warm Beverages:  Encourage employees to share their holiday treats, such as freshly baked cookies or get a team together to prepare gingerbread houses, and hot chocolate.  Offer healthy options alongside traditional treats to cater to diverse dietary needs.

Holiday-Themed Contest:  Encourage creativity and friendly competition with a holiday-themed contest like a Christmas carol karaoke competition, or a festive photography contest.

Celebrate the Spirit of Giving: Encourage employees to give back to the community by participating in charitable initiatives, such as donating to local charities or organizing fundraising events. This fosters a sense of shared purpose and contributes to a more meaningful workplace culture.

Organize a Physical Activity:  Offer discounted gym memberships, or host a friendly fitness competition or walking excursion.

Employee Appreciation: Acknowledge employees contributions with handwritten notes, gift cards, public recognition, or other thoughtful gestures.

Be Mindful of Different Cultures and Traditions: Respect the diverse cultural backgrounds and religious beliefs of employees. Ensure that holiday celebrations are inclusive and respectful of all traditions.
